The Art, Science and Sustainable Community Symposium, hosted by Richland College, will feature a discussion on the role of water within the new model of sustainability. The symposium centers on themes of the built environment’s response to preserving ecology, striking a symbiotic equilibrium between human development and nature, and utilization of science towards creative responsibility.

REBECA MENDEZ is a professor at UCLA, Design | Media Arts who works in photography and video art installations to explore issues of perception, specifically our relationship to technologically mediated nature. Méndez’s works are included in the permanent collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, National Design Museum, NY, and Denver Art Museum, among many others.

KIM STRINGFELLOW is an artist and educator residing in Los Angeles, California. She teaches multimedia and photography courses at San Diego State University as an associate professor in the School of Art, Design, and Art History. She received her MFA in Art and Technology from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2000.

JARROD BECK'S MIGRATION CENTER

Jarrod Beck's Migration Center opened yesterday at the Lawndale Art Center.

From Jarrod via the Landarts Listserve:

"Migration Center is a displaced built environment—beginning as a cast in place structure in the Mary E. Bawden Sculpture Garden, the project is contextualized and studied in the Lawndale Art Center’s room 317. Offsite, shards of glass from the remains of a previous installation were traced onto drafting film. These pieces were collaged with other materials from the deconstructed installation, and sewn or rolled into long pockets. Each pocket was filled with plaster, and after the curing process the films were removed, redrawn and used again as formwork. From the aggregate of many pieces, a field drawing is created. It will change over the course of the installation, and its pieces will be reused in the next Center project.
After traveling through the other Lawndale galleries, the visitor is offered a place of rest and contemplation in room 317. Skins from the casting process, in concert with a series of new drawings, fill one’s field of vision. Eyes trace this hanging terrain of map and making and see the exterior piece anew as one exits the art center. "

The International Association for Environmental Philosophy is holding
its second biennial summer conference from May 24-26, 2010 at Salisbury
University in Salisbury Maryland. Keynote lectures will be given by
Irene Klaver, director of The Water Project at the University of North
Texas, and John Murungi, co-founder of the International Association for
the Study of the Environment, Space and Place at Towsend University.
James Hatley, SU Department of Philosophy, and Derek Bowden, SU
Department of Music, are the conference directors.

Submission Guideline: Proposals for papers should address in some manner
the theme of Geo-Aesthetics in the Anthropocene broadly understood.
Submission of proposals for installations, presentations of art works,
musical performances, poetry readings and theatrical performances are
also encouraged. Send electronic submissions by email to

Cynthia Hooper creates short films that observe sites such as waste disposal landscapes, effluent pipes, and salt mines. This CLUI Independent Interpreter exhibit features seven of Hooper’s films: CESPT, Cuyahoga, Bay Dredge, Cummings Road Landfill, Lazaro Cardenas Electrizada, Basura Quemada, and La Morita Enamorada.

Opening night event - Cynthia Hooper will talk about trans-border water issues in the Mexicali Valley of Mexico and the Imperial Valley of Southern California, and will screen her latest film, Meximperiali on Friday, January 22 at 8pm. Please arrive early - seating is limited.

Beam Camp Seeks Ambitious Collaborative Project Proposals for Summer 2011

You supply the plan and vision. We'll supply 100+ energetic campers and staff and 700+ acres of forest, mountain and lakes as studio, canvas and workshop. Submit your proposal today to be Beam's 2011 Project Master.

THE PROJECT
Each summer Beam commissions a Project Master to design a unique large-scale collaborative endeavor that campers produce and enjoy. The Project can range from the conceptual to the structural. We are looking for big ideas that will challenge and excite our campers and staff. Our Project Management Team will work with the Master to "translate" the Master's project blueprint into the camp context.

THE CAMP
Beam Camp is a 4-week summer program for boys and girls aged 7-17 in Strafford, New Hampshire. Beam Campers cultivate hands-on skills while exploring innovative thinking, design and the creative process. They transform ideas into artifacts and personal achievement into community success.Teams of campers work on different aspects of the Project each morning. In the afternoons, they participate in /Domains/,unique, in-depth, hands-on explorations in the arts, sciences, athletic or cultural fields.

Project Criteria

* Make it big.
* Don't limit yourself to "camp-y" themes.
* Construction can be a central component, but doesn't have to be.

Unfolding over a timeframe of ten to thirty seconds, each project accompanies a transition of the website’s background color from white (day) to black (night) and vice versa. A new project will be posted every three to four months.

Christiane Paul, the Whitney’s adjunct curator of new media, notes: “What distinguishes these projects is that they use whitney.org as their habitat, disrupting, replacing, or engaging with the museum website as an information environment. CHENG LONG WETLANDS International Environmental Art Project in Taiwan

“Children and Artists Celebrate the Wetlands”

Artists from all countries are invited to send a proposal for a site-specific public art outdoor sculpture installation that will involve working with local elementary school children to create an artwork focusing on making a greener world and celebrating the importance of wetlands in our environment. Artists will work alongside other international artists and Taiwanese artists and also participate in educational programs and work with teachers, children and the community during a 19-day residency in rural Yunlin County, Taiwan.


Deadline for Entries: February 12, 2010. Artists will be notified by March 1, 2010.

Installation Work Period and Residency at Cheng Long Wetlands, Taiwan: April 7 (artists arrive) – April 26 (artists depart)

Dates of the Exhibition: April 23 (opening ceremony)- July 25, 2010

About the Exhibition Place:
The Cheng Long Wetlands is a developing wetlands preserve and environmental education area in Yunlin Country located on the southwestern coast of Taiwan. The Cheng Long Elementary School has about 75 children in grades K-6 (ages 5-12) who will join with the artists in this project. This area in Taiwan is economically depressed, and most jobs have been traditionally connected with fish farming and nearby oyster farming. Most young people now have to move away to find jobs. There are no super markets, movie theaters or coffee shops, but this place will offer artists a unique cultural experience and an opportunity to share life with a community in rural Taiwan. The Art Shanty Projects return to the frozen Medicine Lake in Plymouth Minnesota with exhibitions of performance, dance, video, science, architecture, and inter-active artistic and athletic feats. Expect innovation, intrigue, and caprice in an unpredictable environment. With 20 Shanties and 15 roving performances, this vibrant laboratory will engage audiences directly in a community space that is part art gallery, part art residency and part social experiment.
Bring your pet moves to the non-stop Dance Shanty, Swap your treasures, stories or songs at the Art Swap Shanty. Ditch your voluptuous parka—the sweltering Black Bania Shanty will render it a pest. Submit messages for public broadcast on the lake. Stay for impromptu films, hot tea, curiously breathing sculpture, an ArtCar parade, and a spectacular BIcicle race. Performances include architectural dance by the BodyCartography Project, Potter-Belmar Labs improvised cinema, and the return of the transmuted Peter + Patience puppets.

ASP is Free to the public.
ASP started in 2003 with one shanty out on Medicine Lake. Inspired by the tradition of ice fishing, ASP has been able to thrive and grow in scale with a unique blend of the familiar with an exciting and innovative art environment. Friends of the Pleistocene (FOP), founded in 002010. Friends of the Pleistocene is a research and communication design organization. We are dedicated to exploring the conjuncture between landscape and contemporary human activity at sites shaped by the geologic epoch of the Pleistocene (2.588 million to 10000 years BP, Before Present). Through our projects, we create contexts and speculative tools for humans to recalibrate their sense of place within the geologic timescale. As a FOP member, you can evolve new pathways of cognition and use them to sense, design, and act in accord with deep time.

In 2010, FOP will focus on Pleistocene Lakes in North America.
